American Beach & Kingsley Plantation, Florida
American Beach is a historic beach community popular with African-American vacationers. It is located north of Jacksonville on Amelia Island in Nassau County. During the time of segregation and the Jim Crow era, African Americans were not allowed to swim at most beaches in Jacksonville, and several black-only areas were created. American Beach was established by Abraham Lincoln Lewis, Florida's first black millionaire and president of the Afro-American Life Insurance Company.
Kingsley Plantation was named for an early owner, Zephaniah Kingsley, who spent 25 years there. The longest span of ownership was under Kingsley and his family, a polygamous and multiracial household controlled by and resistant to the issues of race and slavery. It is located at the northern tip of Fort George Island at Fort George Inlet, and is part of the Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve managed by the U.S. National Park Service. (Wikipedia)
