Jekyll Island Club (built 1887). Jekyll Island was purchased in 1886 by a group of America's most elite families, to become their exclusive winter retreat known as the Jekyll Island Club. For more than half a century, the nation's leading families, including the Rockefellers, Morgans, Pulitzers, and Goulds came to Jekyll Island "to secure an escape." After the depression and WWII, the resort declined, and in 1947, the state of Georgia condemned the island and paid the remaining members a total of $675,000. Undated photo.
